“Mother America” reflects the complex foundation of a nation built through both nurture and struggle. At its core is a Black mother figure, representing generations of enslaved women who were forced to care for and nurse not only their own children, but also the children of their enslavers sustaining a country that often denied them dignity.
The American flag wrapped around the child symbolizes a nation carried through sacrifice, resilience, and survival. This piece acknowledges the painful truth that America was shaped by both division and connection, where even in oppression, lives and cultures became intertwined.
At the same time, Mother America points to growth how the blending of races, cultures, and immigrant stories has become one of the nation’s greatest strengths. It invites viewers to reflect on the cost of that history while recognizing the evolving beauty of a country still learning how to care for all of its people.
